New L.A. quintet Tambourines profess to like falling asleep at parties, playing dead, breakfast burritos and “listening to dad rock and step-dad rock.” While we investigate the precise differences between the latter two, some introductions are in order. The band formed around the songwriting alliance of Miles West and Juan Uribe (they point out: not the former Dodger/current New York Mets infielder), who are joined by bassist Joey Briggs, keyboardist Alex Rogers and drummer Mark Edwards. Late last year, they debuted what they call their “lemonade rock” — it’s a spiked beverage being doled out by an increasing number of L.A. psych-rock bands serving all your spaced-out needs. Tambourines’ first single “Daisy,” recorded with bassist Will Sturgeon, falls somewhere between the audacious experimentation of Fever the Ghost and the meticulous jangle of Talk in Tongues; it gets its flower power from pugilistic riffs and rhythms, all stuffed into a maw of distortion and swirling synths. “Daisy” is being released as a cassette single next week by New Professor Music.
