Ears Wide Open: Lou Pine

Lou Pine

You only have to look as far as the slyly punny band name to find the wolf in Lou Pine, and you don’t have to get very far into their album “Teapot Dome Scandal” to hear the howlin’. The L.A. trio’s ferocious take on blues-rock falls in the same orbit with other old-schoolers like the Record Company: dirty-pretty guitars, big grooves and deep-down vocals from the fertile soil of Motown and Delta blues. Lou Pine is comprised of Ryan Schiff, Joe Conner and Ricky Bakken; Schiff is the main man at the West L.A. School of Rock, so you know those kids are learning their rock ā€™nā€™ roll ABCs. But they might have to live a little bit before they really feel tracks like “Hard Love” and “Love Just One.” Extra credit if they know who was president during the actual Teapot Dome Scandal.
