White Sea

Morgan Kibby got some attention from her co-writing and performing days with M83, leading to writing songs with the likes of Panic! At The Disco and Big Data, and her musician chops led to doing remixes for Lord Huron, Britney Spears, Demi Lovato, Imagine Dragons, School of Seven Bells, Lorde and Active Child, to name a few, but it’s her voice that has fans tingling. From its big wide raspy reaches that could fill a valley, to the higher than high falsetto peaking up where the oxygen is thin but the view is majestic, she has quite the set of pipes, on display in her solo project, White Sea. 2014 saw the release of her first full album under that moniker, “In Cold Blood,” and Kibby has recently begun unveiling songs that will end up on her next album. To be honest, the first single “Stay Young Get Stoned” seems a bit like something she should have handed over to Miley Cyrus and made a million bucks off. “Never A Woman,” on the other hand, could only be sung by Morgan Kibby. The energetic tune conveys the story of someone who parties a lot and gets swept away in a cloud of smoke by the lustful indulgences of Los Angeles, the men, the drinks, the endless nights, and, without saying it exactly, staying young forever. The other song feels like patty-cake in comparison, though it’s good, too. “Never A Woman” showcases Kibby’s formidable singing from start to finish. The 1980s feel to the pacing and instrumentation will make you put your lipstick on all wrong because you can’t stop bouncing around while it’s playing, using your hairbrush as a microphone, wrapping your body in the shower curtain— you get the picture.
