Ears Wide Open: Slutever

slutever

Slutever is a Los Angeles-based duo with a truly awful band name — Whatever was already taken, so they had to use some, y’know, imagination — and in a scene frothing at the bit to toast anything young and visceral, they have been anointed the next Girlpool. Or maybe Girlpool is the next Slutever. They have the same number of letters in their names, although Slutever obviously have more distortion pedals. Anyway, Nicole Snyder and Rachel Gagliardi have their roots in Philadelphia, where their lo-fi slash-and-crash first emerged on a series of EPs and 7-inch releases. The self-professed celebrants of “teen girl culture” sound darned-near grown-up on their new “Almost Famous” EP, which comes out Feb. 17. It’s loud, confident and concise — not to mention catchy as hell. The women say they want to be the most famous band never to release a full-length album; in an age when the topography of one’s posterior can make you a celebrity, maybe all it will take is an EP and a selfie stick. I’m not betting against them.
