Video: Youngblood Hawke, ‘Private Eyes’

Consider this cover of Hall & Oates’ “Private Eyes” an example of band calisthenics. It’s the work of L.A. electro-pop band Youngblood Hawke, who, to their credit, take ownership of the 1981 hit rather than just ape it. The video, shot by Janell Shirtcliff and edited by singer-keyboardist Sam Martin, captures the stalker vibe of the song too. But why use all that perfectly good face paint on a cover song? Martin explains: “We spent the majority of 2014 on the road touring songs off of our first album “Wake Up,” and now we’ve locked ourselves up in the studio for the last five months recording our second full-length album. We’re writing and recording every day and can’t wait to share the new songs. Until then, we plan on releasing a cover song accompanied by a band-made music video every month until the album is released. It’s an inspiring and challenging process and a chance for us to recreate some of our favorite songs with a spin of our own.” Fair enough. Youngblood Hawke, we’ll be watching you.
