This weekend in L.A.

[Happy birthday, Travis Barker. Hope you bounce back soon.]

Friday: What a weekend our little burg has in store for music fans. Let’s start with the buzziest stuff: Athens quintet Dead Confederate brings a blast of Southern rock to Spaceland [download: “The Rat”], with Apollo Sunshine also playing. … On Sunset Boulevard, the Little Ones play their first local show in what seems like forever (at the Echo), and Bay Area quartet Deerhoof makes noise downstairs (at the Echoplex). … Surprised to see Uh Huh Her play such a big room (the Avalon) but it should be quite a dance party. … Mudhoney (with O.C. newbies Japanese Motors in tow) brings its big fuzz to the El Rey Theatre (and to think that venue had the chairs out Thursday night for the sitdown John Doe/Kathleen Edwards show). … Ben Folds tickles the ivories at the Wiltern. … Polysics spazzes out at the Glass House. … O.C.-based balladeer Tyrone Wells continues his remarkable run at the Troubadour. … In Long Beach, it’s the Parson Red Heads and Castledoor at Alex’s Bar. … And Joe Firstman and Keaton Simons are at the Hotel Cafe.

Saturday: There’s an incredible music lineup (along with visual arts offerings) at the Sound Downtown Music & Arts Festival in Santa Ana. Yeah, Hollywoodsters, that’s in O.C., but it’s easy: You hop on the I-5, point it south and look for the big green signs. … Also In O.C., for your screaming pleasure, Underoath rocks the Bren Center. … Brooklyners and Pitchfork faves Gang Gang Dance bring it at the El Rey. … Danielson marks the release of its retrospective, “Trying Hartz (First Fruits ’94-’04),” at the Troubadour [download: “Animal in Every Corner”]. … L.A. folkie Aaron Beaumont celebrates the release of “Nothing’s Forever, Not Even Goodbye” at the Hotel Cafe. … Adult and Pop Noir entertain at the Echoplex. … And Minus the Bear — who also play the Music Box @ Fonda on Sunday with Annuals — perform at the Glass House.

Sunday: The big news Sunday is the first Part Time Punks Festival, which brings A Certain Ratio to the Echoplex for the Manchester post-punks’ first U.S. show since 1985. A great mix of cutting-edge newbies and bands reunited. [Full schedule after the jump]. … Also, downtown’s Club Nokia has the B-52’s, supported by tuneful locals the 88. … Fun youngsters A Cursive Memory rock the Troubadour. … And on the mellow side, formidable local songwriter Charlie Wadhams continues his residency at Tangier.

I have probably missed some things, but I am but one geek.
