Tonight in L.A.

[Happy birthday, Matt Sorum. Spiffy site.]

Straight outta Wasilla, Alaska — yeah, them and Sarah Palin — Portugal. The Man hits the Troubadour tonight with the very rockin’ Earl Greyhound opening. Not quite sure I’ve gotten my ears around what Portugal is doing, but maybe you can: Check out the video for “Lay Me Back Down.”Usher has gone and sold out Club Nokia, and with the ohGr show at the El Rey pretty much for Skinny Puppy fans only, we are left with a trove of smaller shows tonight. It’s a good trove, though: The Yelling bring their bombast to Echo (Night Horse supports). … Karin Tatoyan heads a nice local bill at the Scene in Glendale. … Archways are getting some good notice; they’re at the Silverlake Lounge. … Venus Infers (even if the poster misspells their name) and the Frail are playing Club Moscow at Boardner’s. … Miranda Lee Richards, who has a Spaceland residency coming up in February, performs at Tangier, and if the singer-songwriter thing fits your midweek mood, Josh Kelley brings his pop to the Hotel Cafe; and over at Mr. T’s Bowl in Highland Park, LA Underground [see the website for four very good downloads] offers a downright sublime lineup that includes Angela Correa, Daniel Ahearn and Rachael Cantu [pictured], among others. Amazingly, it’s free — by far the bargain of the night.
