With the band’s 20th-anniversary tour over, the Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan is now taking heat for comments he made in a post-show interview with the Chicago Tribune’s pop music critic, Greg Kot. After reading it through a couple times, I think that If Corgan’s guilty of anything, it’s simply of being too frank — he’s clear about the band’s objectives and strategies, does not hide his disdain for nostalgia-seekers and isn’t keen on mollifying fans ticked off about the Pumpkins’ recent direction. Good for him for not playing kissy-face.
What a douchebag. If it was “your band” nobody would ask about james and d’arcy during every interview. I agree nobody cares about the original members of the cure, but that’s the cure. The way you presented the band a decade ago on such venues as “MTV” and “THE ENTIRE DECADE OF THE 90’s” you referred to The Smashing Pumpkins as “our band” and “here are my band mates James Iha and D’arcy”. What Billy coragan of the reunited smashing pumpkins fame fails to realize is that you can sell out the stadium or do albums and tour small. You’re not going to get both.
Also LOL at him posting a “clarification” on his interview where he “clarifies” his position about the smashing pumpkins.
Billy Corgan is nowhere near the level that Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen are on. It’s positive and encouraging to hear him have that view of himself, any successful artist should think of himself as that relevant, but it’s not reality at all. Billy Corgan has more in common with musicians like Eric Clapton, Axl Rose and Eddie Van Halen.
