This weekend in L.A.: Franz, Franti and Fol Chen

[Holy cow, kids, I’m running behind today because of the Coachella lineup frenzy. Birthday greetings today go out to Phil Collins, who is not playing Coachella – that we know of. And here’s some weekend shows; I’ll update this post later, so check back, please …]

Tonight: Franz Ferdinand’s 7 p.m. set at Amoeba [which will be streamed live, by the way] is sure to be a madhouse – not that the rest of the evening won’t be. … Adele holds forth at the Wiltern, but plenty shows in small clubs hold a lot of interest too. … For instance, Ben Harper’s new band Relentless 7 plays the Mint. … The Hotel Cafe lineup is loaded. It’s the last of one-woman-storm Theresa Andersson’s shows there (it’s at 7 too, in case Amoeba is too crowded, and worth every penny), and she’s followed by the likes of Eleni Mandell, Greg Laswell, Jim Bianco and Andy Clockwise. Whew. … Tyrone Wells headlines the El Rey Theatre. … The Submarines and the Morning Benders kick off their tour at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. … Good one down at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach, with the Riverboat Gamblers, Mike Watt and others. … It’s not a regular stop of mine, but 14 Below in Santa Monica has the Boston-bred metal of Ketman. … And Lovelikefire is back, rocking Spaceland with the help of Shiloe (playing prior to the Journey cover band infinity).

Saturday: In the big rooms, Michael Franti and Spearhead (with the Aggrolites) bring the good vibes to Club Nokia, while Katy Perry brings her thing to the Wiltern. … Nickel Eye ventures down to O.C. to play the Detroit Bar (the Shys open). … And the Black Heart Procession proceeds to Spaceland.

Sunday: After the Super Bowl (which you can catch at the Hard Rock Cafe with a performance from Shiny Toy Guns), the place to be is Spaceland, where the Rock Against HD (a benefit for the Huntington’s Disease Society of America) gives you a trio of local standouts, Light FM, Radars to the Sky [pictured] and Fol Chen. … On the Sunset Strip that night, Halloween Swim Team and Dalmacio von Diamond head up a good local bill at the Viper Room … And Calvin Johnson plays the Smell.
