image002Eleven L.A. artists cover Paul (and Linda) McCartney on the new charity compilation “RAM on L.A.,” being released digitally on Monday through local blog Aquarium Drunkard’s Autumn Tone Records. Justin Gage, the man behind the blog and the label, explains that as he hatched the idea for a compilation of local bands last year, he sought a common thread for the collection.

“A revisited appreciation of Paul McCartney’s 1971 solo album, RAM, had begun to see a resurgence of sorts within a number of local Eastside artists, coming up in conversations and on the turntables of various house parties,” Gage says in a press release. “The theme was found.”  Over the course of the second half of 2008, 11 Angeleno artists individually went in to various studios, rehearsal spaces and apartments to record their take on what is my favorite, and arguably, McCartney’s best solo work. … The end result is RAM On L.A.”

Earlimart, the Broken West and the Parson Red Heads are among the artists on the compilation. Plus, there’s a pretty trippy version of “Long-Haired Lady” courtesy of Amnion. Folks who download the album are asked to make a donation to the Macca-approved charity No More Landmines.
