Singer, songwriter, composer and arena rocker Mark Mallman says via press release that his is re-recording his forthcoming album, tentatively titled “Invincible Criminal,” on Badman Recordings. Yeah, he had one done, and then, “I sat back and listened to a record in the major key, when my life had gone totally sour – my girlfriend was screwing her tango instructor, I ran my car into a light pole, and I had a never-ending fever and no health insurance. So I was like, f*** it, this is a lie, I’m not happy at all.” So I started a really dark record, and my life turned around! Oh, the irony.” Meanwhile, the man who reminds you of Meatloaf one moment and the Replacements the next is offering a free download of his entire best-of collection, spanning 10 years. Meanwhile, Mallman’s other project, Ruby Isle, the trio that released its debut “Night Shot” last fall, has resumed an endeavor it started a couple years ago – covering whatever song is No. 1 on the elbo.ws chart. See here for all of them, all vocodered up. Or grab my favorite, below.
Art Brut’s new album “Art Brut vs. Satan” – described by frontman Eddie Argos as “quite feisty and argumentative,” imagine that – was recorded in December and produced by Frank Black. It’s out May 12 on Downtown, and the first punk-blast of a single, “Alcohoics Unanimous,” is streaming over at Pitchfork, with a video featuring some familiar L.A. faces. (Me, I think guitarist Jasper Future could be a star.) No local dates scheduled right now for the raucous quintet, but over at RCRDLBL.com, there’s a one-week offering of the B-side.
Portland’s Tara Jane ONeil recently signed to K Records to release her fifth album “A Ways Away,” due May 5. The bassist for the punk band Rodan as a teenager, ONeil has blossomed into an adventurous songwriter – her lyrically vivid compositions are nestled into dreamy, melodic arrangements. No local dates currently scheduled for ONeil, but here’s a taste from the new album:
