Friends are rallying en masse in support of Peter Case, the L.A. icon who underwent emergency open-heart surgery on Jan. 15. A fund, Hidden Love, has been set up to help defray the medical expenses of the former Plimsouls frontman, 55, who had no health insurance and is expected to make a full recovery. And a three-night benefit May 1-3 is planned at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica – the $50-per-night shows feature Loudon Wainwright III and friends on the first night; Dave Alvin, Bill Morrissey, Stan Ridgway and others on the second night; and T-Bone Burnett and friends on the third night.
More benefits: Singer-songwriter Amy Wallace performs Monday (doors 8 p.m.) at the Gibson Showroom, 9350 Civic Center Dr., Beverly Hills, in a benefit for Falling Whistles, a charity supporting war-affected children in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s also the release of Wallace’s new EP, “Angels and Devils.” … Dannyfund.org, a melanoma research charity named for Danny Federici – keyboardist and accordion player in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band – will be the receive the proceeds from a show April 19 at the Troubadour featuring Tom Morello, Joe Purdy and Jason Heath and the Greedy Souls, among others, and hosted by Robert Schimmel. The night was organized by Heath and his bandmate Jason Federici, Danny’s son.
Miscellany: April 18 in National Record Store Day (falling inconveniently right in the middle of Coachella). You can check the website’s extensive list for in-store performances and other good stuff; meanwhile, at Coachella, the Zia Record Exchange store (they’ve taken over for Virgin) will have its usual heavy schedule of autograph signings. … LA Weekly gives us a peek at the Jane’s Addiction boxed set “Cabinet of Curiosities,” which doesn’t seem like too bad a deal (via Amazon) (oops, heck with Amazon – check your online headlines – get it from Rhino). … Local noiseniks Kill Kill Kill have signed to Hello My Name Is Records. … And congrats to Venus Infers (three awards), Japanese Motors (two) and Aushua and the Shys (one each), who were among the bands who took home hardware last week at the OC Music Awards.
