Tonight in L.A.: Casxio, Dawes, Courtenay Green

[Happy birthday to Lee Majors – the Six Million Dollar Man turns 70 today, and if you think there’s no musical connection you’ve obvously never heard his 1981 tune “The Unknown Stuntman.”]

casxio-myspIn an earlier version of this post, I had Edward Sharpe playing at the Regent Theater. I was wrong, wrong, wrong. that residency starts next Thursday. Apologies for having my dates confused.

Can’t wait to hear what comes next from Casxio [pictured] – the L.A. quartet does a very sophisticated take on electro-soul, with bass-slinging frontman Lucas Guerin channeling Sly Stone while his bandmates provide very snug backing. They’re one of the most underrated bands around, but maybe not for long. They headline Spaceland tonight. … Folky quartet Dawes heads up a good lineup at the Echo. … At the Silverlake Lounge, Courtenay Green celebrates the release of her EP, “Mixed Message” (reminds me some of 10,000 Maniacs) on a bill that includes Gamble House, among others. … In the big rooms, it’s Joss Stone and Joshua Radin downtown at Club Nokia; the Black Kids and Mates of State at the Music Box @ Fonda; and UB40 at the House of Blues. … In O.C., Castledoor and the Shys rock the Yost Theater in Santa Ana, while Links plays the Detroit Bar. … Bay Area acts Dizzy Balloon and the Pack play the Knitting Factory. … I will pass on it, but some band is playing a street show in Hollywood tonight. … And it’s the record-release show for Freddy & Francine at the Hotel Cafe.
