[Birthday greetings go out today to Brian Eno, so let’s have a busy weekend in his honor …]
Tonight: I like to think of the Aggrolites’ music as a cocktail of reggae, funk, soul and some elbow grease. They call it “dirty reggae,” and tonight at the El Rey, the L.A. band [pictured] will have a big coming out party for “Aggrolites IV” (due June 9 on Hellcat). … Speaking of soul, Austin’s Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears (all the rage with some people at SXSW, although they left me wanting) are at the Troubadour with Lucero. … It’s” Amateurs‘ record-release party at Spaceland, with Death to Anders and the World Record. … Should be crazy party at the Echo for Ponytail. … Huntingfield celebrates its CD release at the Roxy. … Also: Christopher Hawley country-fies the Good hurt; the Lovetones rock the Redwood Bar; and Doves visit at House of Blues Anaheim.
Saturday: Internet radio collective and dispensers of general good vibrations Dublab have a big fund-raising event downtown. “The Labrat Matinee VI” is part of the station’s annual “Proton Drive” – and Flying Lotus will highlight the evening with a special set with live projections. There will also be film and video screenings and a rooftop party. …
Of course, there’s the KROQ Weenie Roast with its pretty amazing (for rock radio) lineup at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre. … Giant Drag resurfaces with its original lineup at the Troubadour. … O+S, the collaboration between Orenda Fink and Cedric Lemoyne, plays the Bootleg Theatre. … Also: The first day of the Doheny Blues Festival in Dana Point; Loney, Dear at Spaceland; Opeth at the Avalon; Doves at the Wiltern; and Cosio at Bordello.
Sunday: Some great choices on this day too – Kevin Devine at the Troubadour, and Jason Heath and the Greedy Souls playing Grand Ole Echo at the Echo. … Day 2 of the Doheny festival features Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. … Also: Acoustic sets by Loney Dear and others at the Bandit Gallery (1549 Sunset), starting at 3 p.m.
