Ears Open: Atlantic Line, Science Fiction Theater

[Another edition of Ears Wide Open – had to shorten the headline, sorry – to catch up with a couple SoCal bands with new releases …]

With siren-like distortion, a familiar chord progression and a big sound, L.A. quintet Atlantic Line announces its arrival on the single “Big Brother.” The fivesome of Ray Silva, William Oraha, Jonathan Correa, Vincent Medina and Noah Alexander melds guitar squalor, dreamy effects and strong melodies to create kind of a prog-meets-shoegaze haze. Atlantic Line’s first album, “Exit to Intro,” is out this week, and the band plays its record-release show Saturday night at the Scene Bar in Glendale.

No, this is not a Buzz Bands ploy to increase readership in Rancho Cucamonga. This is a shout-out to Science Fiction Theater, a young Inland Empire four-piece whose self-titled debut album rings with hook-heavy power pop. Brothers Mike and Matt Jimenez and pal Artie Marchain recorded the album with producer/engineer Shawn Sullivan. Good stuff for your summertime pop mix. SFT plays June 23 at Crane’s Hollywood Tavern.
