The Veils’ third album, “Sun Gangs,” establishes Finn Andrews as a frontman who can do just about anything, and will. The son of XTC founding member and Bowie/Eno sideman Barry Andrews, Finn shape-shifts from acoustic pop to electrifying anthems to piano ballads to thrashy noise over the album’s 10 tracks, his moods ranging from Bono hopeful to Cave dark. It’s disarming at times, even maddening, but each time you want to turn away, Andrews unveils a magical image or brilliant turn of phrase.

I love Camera Obscura for more than their sense of humor, but today that gets a nod too. In honor of Bastille Day, the Scottish quintet is offering a free download of “French Navy,” the first track off its stellar April release, “My Maudlin Career.” Didn’t the citizenry run naked through the streets at the original Bastille Day celebration? Ah, those were the days.

Looking forward to the Veils tonight.
Barry Andrews was also the frontman for Shriekback.
Excellent stuff, My Maudlin Career.. it’ll be up near the top of my lists for this year.
