sonvoltMy trip to the heartland yielded a good read or two, including this Riverfront Times interview with Son Volt’s Jay Farrar on his band’s new album “American Central Dust.” The quintet plays the Wiltern tonight with the Cowboy Junkies. … The “Also I Like to Rock” free concert series at the Hammer Museum continues with Foreign Born and Warpaint. … Big night for world rhythms at the Echoplex, where locals Rainbow Arabia – who have a new album titled “Kabukimono” coming July 28 – play with the Afro-beat-inspired Pitchfork darlings The Very Best and Argentina’s Bersa Discos. … With their new album “Shaka Rock” out on Aug. 25, Australian quartet Jet zoom back into SoCal for a date at the Key Club, with Red Cortez supporting. … It’s an excellent night for vintage punk bands too – the Zeros headline the Troubadour, backed by the Muffs and Prima Donna, and the Germs and Agent Orange team up at the El Rey Theatre, with Spider Problem supporting. … Up-and-coming San Diego quartet Dirty Sweet rock Spaceland, along with Bloodcat Love, White Arrows and Heavy Young Heathens. … Firs unleashes its dreamy instrumental rock at the Silverlake Lounge. … And at the Echo, it’s solid four-pronged lineup featuring the Flying Tourbillon Orchestra,” the Monolators, French Miami and Kissing Cousins. … Also: Gillian Welch at Largo; Kate Earl at the Hotel Cafe; the Spires at Echo Curio; Oh Darling at 3 Clubs; Ginger Wildheart at the Viper Room; and, if you’ve got $60 to burn, American Idols Live at Staples Center.
