Had the Trashcan Sinatras emerged in the middle of this decade instead of the mid-’80s, I suspect they’d be festival-playing, Pitchfork-approved indie-pop heroes. As it is, the Scottish sextet has had an up-and-down ride – three brilliant albums in the ’90s (and some MTV buzz) followed by record-label woes that caused the band to declare bankruptcy; and a fallow period followed by an alliance with producer Andy Chase (Ivy) that resulted in the comeback albums “Weightlifting” (2005) and “In the Music,” which came out this month. The Trashies’ cult following has always been strong in L.A., and they bring their liltingly beautiful music to the Troubadour tonight, with Chase’s band Brookville opening. … Also: Bedouin Soundclash at the Roxy; Samuel Stewart at Club Moscow at Boardner’s; the Ross Sea Party at the Viper Room; Anticon favorites Themselves, with [Post-Foetus] and Emily Wells at Club NME at Spaceland; the Movies, Seasons and Vibe Slayer at Bordello; ex-Translator guy Steve Barton & the Oblivion Click, Adam Marsland and J.P. Cregan at the Echo as part of International Pop Overthrow; Crystal Antlers at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach; Watts Ensemble and Firs at the Bootleg Theater; the Soft Pack and Little Red Radio at Pershing Square; Brandon Reynolds at the Silverlake Lounge; Pierre de Reeder at Mr. T’s Bowl; and Ernie Halter at the Hotel Cafe.
Wow…I’ve been to probably 50 shows at the Troubadour over the last 7 years…the only one I can think of that was more boring was Low back in ’05. Every note that was played and sung by the Sinatras…where is the passion? Where is the emotion? It was embarrassing. Every song was the same tempo. Every member of the band held down their 1′ x 1′ area without deviation. If you’re wanting excitement…go to Antarctica and watch a glacier melt. Because compared to that, this will cure insomnia.
Kevin, I highly doubt you have seen this band in concert…if you had…Yawn. Here are acts I’ve seen in the last month that were better: M. Ward, Calexico, the Shore, Blondie, Duran Duran, Nada Surf…the list goes on. I can’t name a band that was worse…other than Low. And that was ’05. Sure they’re albums are good…but live…yikes. Move on.

Thanks for the kind words on the Trashies….It was a brilliant show as usual.
