The 88 have begun work on the follow-up to its third album “Not Only … But Also,” which helped get them picked up by Island Records last year. There are few finer purveyors of power-pop around, and the L.A. quartet this month is doing something of a return to its roots – a Tuesday night residency at Spaceland, starting tonight with Daniel Brummel and the French Semester on the bill. They promise old songs, new song and some surprises. You never know with these guys; currently on their MySpace page, there’s a song they recorded on an iPhone. … Mew’s six-day cinema installation opened over the weekend at Zune L.A. (8275 Beverly Blvd.) – it showcases the videos (including ones for three new singles) of director Martin De Thurah.
