Running down (and running) Eagle Rock Music Fest

Can there be too much of a good thing? The Eagle Rock Music Festival – which, if you have any affection for good local music at all, qualifies – is liable to have you sprinting up and down Colorado Boulevard on Saturday. By my count, there are about 70 bands performing on 15 or so stages – and there are other cool happenings, such as Pehrspace’s “Pehriscope” (at Swork coffeehouse)” – one-time collaborations by artists such as the Monolators, Meredith Meyer and Timonium incorporating projections, films, live soundtracking and more. The festival is neighborhood-y is the best way possible.

Top 5 Reasons I Will Be Out of Breath Saturday on Colorado Boulevard
1) The Happy Hollows on the Ship Stage: One of several stages boasting an incredible lineup. The Hollows’ “Spells” could be my L.A. album of the year. [Pictured above]
2) The Gears on the Razorcake/Zocaloc Stage: Kids, you need to genuflect a little here. The Gears are Glassell Park originals, formed in 1978, and singer Axxel Reese and Dave Drive went on to form the D.I.s. Read up. Check out Hepcat’s re-releases. And, hey, the Gears have a song called “Don’t Be Afraid to Pogo.”
3) No Age on the Emerging Stage: And Jail Weddings, Free Moral Agents and Leslie & the Badgers, to name-check a couple more. Fol Chen has had to cancel due to illness, but there are plenty of reasons to camp out here.
4) It’s Dublab’s birthday: The L.A. collective is celebrating with a week’s worth of events, and at the ERMF the Labrats man the Global Stage, where the Gaslamp Killer is among the many reasons to stop by with a birthday cupcake.
5) Old friends and new playing great pop on the Kingsize Soundlabs Stage: I won’t go through the whole lineup, but here’s a trivia question – who was the local musician I featured in the very first Buzz Bands column in the Times way back in the day? This guy.
See you there.
