[Wishing happy 40th birthday to Damon Gough, who’s Badly Drawn Boy to most folks, and zooming into the weekend. I have keep this real brief this morning …]

Today: If you don’t win the lotto and get into the Thom Yorke “rehearsal” at the Echoplex, there are a couple of other shows that have my heart atwitter: The Postmarks and Brookville at Spaceland, and World Party and Parade of Lights at the El Rey. … There’s also the release party for the amazing banjo-toting folkie Frank Fairfield at McCabe’s. … Also: Amadou & Mariam at the Fonda; the Horrors and Japanese Motors at the Glass House; Robert Earl Keen at the Troubadour; Year Long Disaster at the Viper Room; David Bazan and Say Hi at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa; the Idyllists’ benefit for the County Firefighters Widows and Orphans Fund at the Hotel Cafe; and Loggins & Messina at the Greek Theatre.

Saturday: With the exception of the Rose Parade, the Eagle Rock Music Festival is the most fun you have while traipsing up and down Colorado Boulevard. No Age, the Happy Hollows, Fol Chen, Leslie and the Badgers and Nico Stai are among the bazillion local bands playing. [Watch for a separate post this afternoon.] … Highly recommended: Elvis Perkins in Dearland [pictured], Tom Brosseau and Correatown at the Troubadour; You Me & Iowa‘s farewell show at Spaceland; and New Model Army and Mellowdrone at the Knitting Factory. … Also Crosby, Stills & Nash at the Greek Theatre ; the Mother Hips at the Glass House; the Pharcyde at the Key Club; and Holly Conlan (who’s celebrating her album release) and the Echo Falls at the Hotel Cafe.

Sunday: The Thom Yorke all-stars play the Orpheum. … Jack Penate and Miike Snow play the Echoplex. … Gil Scott-Heron plays the El Rey. … David Bazan and Say Hi play the Troubadour. … Westsiders should check out the Minor Canon at the Dakota Lounge in Santa Monica. … Kylie Minogue plays the Hollywood Bowl. … And parental units should tote their children the Kidrockers matinee show at the Echo, featuring the Damselles and Quazar and the Bamboozled.
