[Birthday wishes to Ride’s Mark Gardener, who turns 40 on Sunday. Here’s what’s up for our weekend:]
Tonight: Big night for the Airborne Toxic Event – the local quintet, just back from a European tour, is playing Disney Hall. They’ll be joined by the Calder Quartet. TATE also recently released a Midnight Ridazz-inspired video for the single “Gasoline” [can’t embed it, sorry, probably because they’re selling it as part of an iTunes bundle, but you can see it here]. … The Cranberries [pictured] have gotten enthusiastic reviews on their reunion tour so far, and the Irish rockers’ show at Club Nokia is sold out. … Fink, the nom de tune of British singer-songwriter Fin Greenwall, brings his lovely acoustic fare to Spaceland, with Family of the Year and the Sweet Hurt opening. … And the Shys and Castledoor team up for early sets leading into Club Underground at the Echo. … Also: Todd Rundgren performing his incredible 1973 album “A Wizard, A True Star” at the Orpheum Theater; Peter Case at McCabe’s; Little Dragon and Hecuba at the El Rey; Camp Freddy at the Roxy; Less than Jake at the House of Blues; Cold Cave and Abe Vigoda at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts; Kay Hanley at Molly Malone’s; Nite Jewel at Gallery 1018; Blue Roses at the Hotel Cafe; Dramarama at the Coach House; Cinematic Sunrise at the Troubadour; Fireball Ministry at the Viper Room; and NOFX at Pomona’s Fox Theater.
Saturday: Stellastarr*, whose third album “Civilized” is one of my sleeper hits of the year (and who really delivered the goods when they played the Troubadour this summer), is back to headline Spaceland. … The Morning Benders (three of whom are SoCal natives) are working on their sophomore release, “Big Echo,” due this spring, and the quartet is back in town to play the Troubadour in support of Bay Area foursome Girls, whose adoring reviews continue to befuddle me and who floundered when they played the El Rey earlier this year. … Taylor Swift heads up the lineup at KIIS-FM’s sold-out Jingle Ball at the Nokia Theatre. … And Kidrockers – the matinee shows geared for kids ages 3 to 13 – had an excellent lineup this month, the 88 and the Flying Tourbillon Orchestra. … Also: Avi Buffalo at Pehrspace; Tom Brosseau at Largo’s Little Room; and the big Rockdrive benefit at the Hotel Cafe with Chris Pierce, Holly Conlan and others.
Sunday: The West Coast Left Coast series at Disney Hall offers a couple of legends – Brian Wilson and Dave Alvin – and a couple of newbies, Harper Simon and the Living Sisters (Inara George, Eleni Mandell and Becky Stark). … Cold Cave and Nite Jewel team up to play Part Time Punks at the Echo (where Charlatans UK main man Tim Burgess is on the schedule to DJ). … Also: The Ruse at the Roxy; Alaskan Summer at the Hotel Cafe; Mack Winston and the Reflections at the Bootleg Theater; and Sharon Temple at Spaceland.
