The Phenomenal Handclap Band are one of those acts you have to suspend your disbelief to like. When I saw them at the El Rey Theatre last year, I couldn’t get past their preening hippiedom, let alone dial in to their mish-mosh of disco-folk. Some people seem to be applauding, though – the band toured Europe with Franz Ferdinand. Tonight they play at set at Origami Vinyl in Echo Park before headlining the Echo, topping a bill that includes Holloys, Jogger and White Arrows. … Big tribute to the late Ron Asheton of the Stooges goes off at the Roxy – among the performers are Clem Burke, Derek Stanton, Circus Boy and Night Horse, and a jam session will feature Mike Watt and Steve Mackay of the Stooges, Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Jesse Hughes (Eagles of Death Metal). … Elsewhere, excellent local shows abound, starting with the 7 p.m. Spaceland on Ice sets at downtown’s Pershing Square featuring Le Switch and the World Record. … The Meeting Places, with Wrong Way Driver and the Robotanists, highlight Club NME at Spaceland. … It’s That Noise at Club Moscow at Boardner’s. … And Space Waves and Molino play the Silverlake Lounge. … Also: Oh Darling at the Bootleg Theater; Kina Grannis at the Troubadour; Bound at the Viper Room; Moses Campbell and Devon Williams at the Smell; Uh Huh Her at Largo; Chris Pureka at the Hotel Cafe; and the Cooling Time at the Dragonfly.
