Tonight: Local blues-rockers Night Horse are starting the new year by getting to work on their sophomore album with producer Matt Bayles (who’s worked with Mastodon, Isis and Pearl Jam), but the quintet is stepping out for a couple of shows this weekend. Tonight they headline Spaceland. … Andy Clockwise [pictured] is kicking off a Friday night residency at the Hotel Cafe. (Jesca Hoop plays earlier.) … State Radio and the Aggrolites will make making a fuss at the El Rey Theatre. … Other enticing things: GZA at the Echoplex; Psychic Powers and Evan Voytas at the Echo; Tigers Can Bite You and Modern Time Machines at Pehrspace; Abe Vigoda and Signals at Echo Curio; and Seasons at the Bootleg Theater.
Saturday: It’s an excellent evening of folk music at the Echo, where A.A. Bondy – whose sophomore album “When the Devil’s Loose” packs a punch – headlines an early show that starts at 6. … Hockey brings the party to Spaceland, where Eastern Conference Champions open. … Also: Papa, along with Chief, at the Bootleg Theater; Radars to the Sky and the Voyeurs at the Dakota Lounge in Santa Monica; Le Switch and Les Blanks at L’Keg (nice one, huh?); Asobi Seksu at the Hotel Cafe; Jesse Sykes at McCabe’s; Bullets and Octane at the Viper Room; and ExDetectives and Wet & Reckless at Mr. T’s Bowl.
Sunday:Adam Franklin of Swervedriver rolls back into L.A. for a show at Spaceland. The Arms support, as does ex-Mezzanine Owls frontman Jack Burnside performing with his new project, currently called Rabbits. … Great lineup at the Bootleg Theater, with Castanets, Tiger Saw, Alps of New South Whales and Bridges Academy Rock Recital playing. … At Part Time Punks, it’s Yummy Fur. … Rival Sons continue their Cinespace residency. … Also: Mose Allison at Largo, and Parker Ainsworth at the Hotel Cafe.
