Tonight: Be Your Own Pet arrived on the scene around 2005 with a screech and snarl, and a rather exhilarating sense that the Nashville quartet was one garage-rock band that might stick around for longer than a chorus. But the band parted ways after two albums in 2008, and now 22-year-old frontwoman Jemina Pearl [pictured] has decided to Be Her Own Artist. Her solo album “Break It Up,” co-written with BYOP drummer John Eatherly and featuring guest turns from Thurston Moore (she’s on his Ecstatic Peace label) and Iggy Pop, came out in October. She headlines Club Underground at the Echo tonight (and opens for the Black Lips on Saturday at the El Rey Theatre). … Also: Cold War Kids and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah frontman Alec Ounsworth at the Wiltern; Nico Vega, Jenny O, Corridor and others doing a benefit for Haiti relief at the Echoplex; Lalah Hathaway at the El Rey Theatre; Joseph Arthur doing the first of two nights at the Troubadour; Andy Clockwise’s residency at the Hotel Cafe (where Tracy Bonham also plays); Jon Brion’s now-monthly (instead of weekly) gig at the largo; Black Lips at the Glass House; Shwayze at the Roxy; Anti-Flag at the Fonda; and Visa at the Viper Room.
Saturday: Good local bill at Spaceland, with Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Wrong Way Driver and Modern Time Machines. … Canada’s City and Colour, with Midwestern folkie Lissie opening, plays to a sold-out Fonda. … Also: Joseph Arthur’s second night at the Troubadour; the Black Lips and Jemina Pearl at the El Rey; the Monthlies at Echo Curio; Mindy Smith and Landon Pigg at the Bootleg Theater; Tony Lucca at the Hotel Cafe; and Vains of Jenna at the Viper Room.
Sunday: Did you get into the auction for tickets to Radiohead’s benefit for Haiti relief? They play the Fonda. … I See Hawks in L.A. plays the first of two shows celebrating the release of their best-of, “Shoulda Been Gold,” at McCabe’s. … And there’s an excellent lineup at Spaceland, featuring the Minor Canon, Rademacher and Andrew Lynch. … Also: Rival Sons continuing their Cinespace residency; Memory at the Echo; and Eleisha Eagle at the Hotel Cafe.
