Holy booming bass drum, the Secret Machines are back. Well, in an abbreviated way. The NYC quartet today released its first new music since 2008’s self-titled album (the band’s third). The single, “Like I Can” (b/w “Terrible Light”) is a scorcher, balancing the trio’s signature atmospherics with enough thrust to launch a space shuttle. Brandon Curtis, Phil Karnats and Josh Garza are curerntly writing for their next album. Curtis explains the new track in the press release: “This song was conceived as a conversation. You know, some of my best conversations have been held between me and myself. Not that I feel particularly anti-social or anything. It’s just that when operating as both parties, one tends to have more patience for revision. Editing for content and language. Balancing intensity of emotion with just the right amount of logic. … Me at my most persuasive? Perhaps not, but it’s a start.” The releases come via the band’s own TSM Recordings label.
