If it weren’t in the open air, I’d say the performance by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings on Wednesday night was roof-rattling. The 53-year-old reigning queen of vintage soul gave a memorable turn at the outdoor theater at Stubb’s during NPR’s SXSW showcase, a night that featured an equally stirring set from the Walkmen as well as outings from Spoon, Broken Bells and Visqueen.
I’m on assignment for SPIN.com this week and will be posting highlights when possible. Above, a photographic tour of the day from L.A.-based Scott Dudelson, who made the rounds from day parties to evening showcases to catch everybody from Roky Erikson to L.A.’s Dawes.
