Ears Wide Open: The Sister Ruby Band

The Sister Ruby Band isn’t the project of anyone’s sister, and it’s not quite a band yet, for that matter; the name is just a way for 21-year-old Johnny Ruby to separate his artistic identities. The Los Angeles-reared, London-based Ruby – real name: Marlon Rabenreither – is studying the visual arts at Goldsmiths University in the U.K. His bedroom recording project, though, has taken wing. His debut EP “A Shot in the Dark” is dreamy good fun, with its gauzy, Jesus and Mary Chain-informed curtain of sound melding with West Coast pop sensibilities. Ruby played all the instruments on the recordings himself, with L.A. studio hand Todd Burke, who’s worked with Beck, Belle and Sebastian and the Kooks, doing the final mixes.
