Coachella: The xx fails to find a sweet spot

Who: The xx at the Outdoor Theatre.
In 3 or Fewer Words: Minimalism stretched thin.
I’ll Forget This Pretty Quickly Because: The sonic appeal of The xx, a sleek, sexy minimalist rock duo, comes largely from their intimate headphones vibe. Subtlety’s rarely a strong suit at Coachella, and the blog darlings failed to turn their online hits into real-life enthusiasm. They had a mammoth crowd, to be sure, but on a day when uncounted walk-ins inflated every audience, that’s hardly in their favor. I like quarter-notes played in the same key, tempo and time signature as much as the next guy, but The xx need to find something else to offer.
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was at Dirty Projectors: Congrats, you missed the simplest songs of the day in favor of the most virtuosic.

I don’t know where your music tastes arose from, but the screaming-to-be-hippie vocals backed up by weak instrument playing never out does a solid trio performance. There “simple” songs at least are attractive to listen to and it doesn’ t take effort to listen to an entire song unlike the dirty pojectors odd eclectic noise. Glad you enjoy dat sh**** hipster scum music, while I’ll gladly enjoy the flawless noice of the best act at coachella.
