Tonight in L.A.: Massive Attack, Roky Erickson, Bigelf

Love the tagline on the MySpace page of trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack: “If a thing’s worth doing, it’s worth doing slowly.” “Heligoland,” the band’s fifth album and first in seven years, was worth the wait – the duo of Robert “3D” Del Naja, Grant “Daddy G” Marshall tapped contributors such as singer Horace Andy (a Massive Attack regular) and the likes of Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio), Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz), Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) and Martina Topley-Bird (Tricky), among others. On their tour, which kicks off a three-night run at the Wiltern tonight, Del Maja and Marshall have concocted a eye-popping display of politically oriented visuals, according to reports. Prepare to be dazzled. … Roky Erickson’s album with Okkervil River, “True Love Cast Out All Evil,” has been called “life-affirming,” and it’s hard to argue. The 62-year-old’s first new material in 14 years, released last month, has some heart-stopping moments [if you haven’t heard it, check out “Goodbye Sweet Dreams”], and Erickson and the Okkervil guys hit the Fonda Theatre tonight, with one of L.A.’s finest unsigned purveyors of Americana, Leslie & the Badgers, opening. … Heavy duty rockers Bigelf, who have been touring in support of Porcupine Tree, bring their massive sound to the Roxy. … And the Ruby Friedman Orchestra continues its every-other-Tuesday run at the Hotel Cafe. … Also: Jonathan Richman at the Smell (not a typo); Sea Wolf and Patrick Park at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa; Scarlet Grey (new album “Fancy Blood” out June 1) at the Troubadour; Black Math Horseman at Spaceland; Converge at the El Rey Theatre; Voices Voices and 60 Watt Kid at the Echo; Styx and Foreigner at the Gibson Amphitheatre; and the Moviegoers at the Silverlake Lounge.
