News bits: Weekend benefits and in-stores

bixbyknollsLow-keying it this weekend? With big sold-out shows in abundance, it might be the way to go. Here are a handful of below-the-radar options:

Benefits: Red Cortez, the VLA and the Bixby Knolls [pictured] – and art from musician types like Matt Maust (Cold War Kids), Joel Graves (Everest) and Nathan Warkentin (We Barbarians) – are the stars of a benefit show tonight for the Environmental Defense Fund’s oil spill-related activities. It goes off at 8 p.m. at the Mezz at the Alexandria Hotel (501. S. Spring St., downtown). …  On Saturday, seven songstresses, including Alyssa Jacey and Marina V, perform at the Avon Breast Cancer Awareness concert at the Dakota Lounge in Santa Monica.

What’s in store: There are a ridiculous number of good record-store performances this weekend. What’s on my calendar: Vacation Vinyl has Sweaters tonight at 7:30 … Origami has Death Kit and LA Font at 7 tonight (in conjunction with Rawkblog’s photo show), Painted Hills at 7 on Saturday and Hot Hot Heat at 7 on Sunday. And Amoeba has Quadron at 5 on Sunday.

Also on a first Friday: Downtown’s Museum of Neon Art (136 W. 4th) features a light-and-music show with tunes from local experimentalists Ubyk.
