[Birthday greetings this weekend to local rockers Michael Bauer (Useless Keys) and Annie Hardy (Giant Drag). Meanwhile:]
One great thing about living in this neighborhood is that if you wait long enough, festivals come to you. Like this weekend – when eight of the acts who graced stages at Coachella 2010 are playing around town. First, you have LCD Soundsystem (tonight at the Palladium and Saturday at the Fox Theater in Pomona); the last of this week’s four Miike Snow shows (tonight at the Fox); The xx (Saturday at the Fonda Theatre and Sunday at the Wiltern); the Middle East (opening for Mumford & Sons tonight at the Fonda); and Local Natives (tonight at the Troubadour and Saturday at the Bootleg Theater). Then are the trio of Coachella 2010 alums – Spoon, Devo and the Temper Trap – playing KROQ-FM’s Weenie Roast on Saturday at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, although to see them you have to subject yourself to Hole and a whole lot of bro-rock. I will settle for checking out select bands on the live webcast here. Not surprisingly, virtually all the aforementioned show are sold out. So, while wondering whether The xx’s live show can ever be even 10% as interesting as its video for “Islands” [above], I give you:
Top 5 shows to check out if you’re not a fan of advance tickets:
‣ Scottish sextet the Trashcan Sinatras bring their harmony-laden pop to the Key Club, where the Ruby Friedman Orchestra and Mike Viola support.
‣ Class Actress plays the Echoplex (with a Neon Indian DJ set after Neon Indian plays the sold-out First Fridays event at the Natural History Museum with Peanut Butter Wolf).
‣ 8mm celebrates the release of “Love and the Apocalypse” tonight at the Viper Room.
‣ On Saturday, the Buzzcocks perform their first two albums, “Another Music in a Different Kitchen” and “Love Bites,” along with other hits, at Club Nokia.
‣ And on Sunday, Sage Francis hits the Fonda Theatre backed by a live band – Free Moral Agents. [corrected]
So much else going on this weekend. See my roundup on LA Weekly’s West Coast Sound.
K-Bro, I believe Free Moral Agents are actually Sage Francis’ backing band…
Thanks for having my back, Mr. Cooper. You’d think somebody would have made that clear in the myriad press releases. You going to the show?
