It’s not just the news of the Vaselines’ return that has a smile on my face, it’s the squalid bite of their new single “I Hate the ’80s.” The Vaselines slipped away too quickly after releasing one album and a handful of singles in the late ’80s and early ’90s (famously compiled on Sub Pop’s “The Way of the Vaselines” in 1992). Now principals Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee are back, with a new album, “Sex With an X,” due Sept. 14 on Sub Pop. The album features Belle & Sebastian guitarist Stevie Jackson and bassist Bob Kildea, as well as the 1990s drummer Michael McGaughrin.
