Sunset Junction announces expanded lineup

Remember when the future of the Sunset Junction Street Fair appeared in jeopardy? Doesn’t seem that way now. The 30th anniversary event, its name now shortened to the Sunset Junction Fair, has announced a lineup that’s fittingly all over the map, and with a bigger map – an expansion to five stages of music –to accommodate it.
While lacking in the marquee names that characterized past Sunset Junctions (nobody quite in the Sonic Youth/X/Broken Social Scene/Conor Oberst/Buzzcocks/Black Keys/Los Lobos league), the lineup is heavy on locals and heavy-hitting locals, and the fare at various stages is less segregated by genre this year.
The festival is Aug. 21-22. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Bullet points:
- The previously rock-dominated Bates Stage is all over the place, with a mix of rock and soul acts leading up to Saturday finishers Ghostland Observatory (with a laser show) and “Bitches Brew 40th Remix” (a reunion of Miles Davis alums). On Sunday, Latin alternative acts reign most of the day until Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros cap the evening.
- A new “Locals Only” stage (at Edgecliffe) presented by the Fold sends up a worthy roster of L.A.’s up-and-comers (among them Eastern Conference Champions and Chief on Saturday and Leslie & the Badgers, Red Cortez, the Deadly Syndrome and Sam Sparro on Sunday).
- The Sanborn Stage is anchored by Fishbone and Bad Brains on Saturday and Meshell Ndegeocello and Lee “Scratch” Perry on Sunday.
- The Hoover Stage gets the Ohio Players as Saturday headliners and the Whispers on Sunday, after late-afternoon sets by Fitz & the Tantrums and Mayer Hawthorne.
- The “Electro/Dance Stage” has a closing set by Shiny Toy Guns on Saturday.

Well, at least Deadly Syndrome is playing. I’m surprised that Useless Keys and Active Child are not present.
