News bits: HARD L.A., Queens of the Stone Age benefit, Lou Barlow, O.C. matinee series, Everclear

Why was the plug really pulled on HARD L.A. this weekend? The Times’ initial blog post cited security reasons, possibly stemming from the public outcry over  the death of a 15-year-old festival-goer at the recent Electric Daisy Carnival. Now promoter Gary Richards has come clean (after initially declining comment), acknowledging extra costs forced the cancellation. This after a lot of talk on the interwebs about flagging tickets sales – along with Flying Lotus telling the LA Weekly blog that he heard “it was about ticket sales.” Those poor M.I.A. fans.

Brian_O_Connor_photo.1‣ Tickets go on sale Friday for a benefit show featuring Queens of the Stone Age and Eagles of Death Metal on Aug. 12 at Club Nokia. Proceeds go to EODM bassist Brian O’Connor [contribute], who was recently diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment in L.A., via a fun established through Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.

‣ Speaking of charity shows, Lou Barlow will be performing on July 24 at the amphitheater in Coldwater Canyon Park for TreePeople.

‣ Hey, Orange County, a Saturday matinee series in August at The Lab in Costa Mesa will benefit the Pablove Foundation. Plenty of Silver Lakey favorites on board – Voxhaul Broadcast, Useless Keys, Red Cortez, Vanaprasta and Casxio, just to name-check a few. Full lineup on the poster here.

‣ And Everclear (with a new full-length coming this fall) headlines a July 25 show at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre benefiting the Life’s Second Chance Foundation, with proceeds going to medical care in Ethiopia. Underground and the Janks are also among the artists playing.
