Tonight in L.A.: The New Pornographers, Tool

1

[I’d like to welcome birthday boy Kevin Haskins to the fifties today. The weather’s nice up here.]

My top 3 reasons to be out among you tonight:

The New Pornographers, boasting their original lineup and a pretty undeniable new album, “Together,” play the first of two nights at the Fonda Theatre, with the Dodos and Imaad Wasif opening.
Mississippi Man continues its residency at the Echo, and I mention this one because I’ve been making the residency rounds this month (I can recommend all four) and it’s Mississippi Man’s turn. (And Buddy opens, buddies.)
‣ The RSVP-only It’s a School Night at Bardot not only features Tom Freund, but a New Pornographers DJ set after their Fonda show and an appearance by “secret guests,” who I am guessing are these guys.

Your tastes may vary: Those other nice residencies? The Outline play the Bootleg Theater (with Grouplove opening); Summer Darling holds forth at Spaceland (no Eastern Conference Champions, although they are listed, but the Franks are supporting); and Yellow Red Sparks hit at the Silverlake Lounge (with the Fling). … Also you have Night 2 of Tool at the Nokia Theatre; the Riverwinds at the Viper Room; Katelyn Epperly at the Mint; Jenni Alpert at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach; and Rocket at the Dragonfly.
