Tonight in L.A.: The New Pornographers, Tool

[I’d like to welcome birthday boy Kevin Haskins to the fifties today. The weather’s nice up here.]
My top 3 reasons to be out among you tonight:
‣ The New Pornographers, boasting their original lineup and a pretty undeniable new album, “Together,” play the first of two nights at the Fonda Theatre, with the Dodos and Imaad Wasif opening.
‣ Mississippi Man continues its residency at the Echo, and I mention this one because I’ve been making the residency rounds this month (I can recommend all four) and it’s Mississippi Man’s turn. (And Buddy opens, buddies.)
‣ The RSVP-only It’s a School Night at Bardot not only features Tom Freund, but a New Pornographers DJ set after their Fonda show and an appearance by “secret guests,” who I am guessing are these guys.
Your tastes may vary: Those other nice residencies? The Outline play the Bootleg Theater (with Grouplove opening); Summer Darling holds forth at Spaceland (no Eastern Conference Champions, although they are listed, but the Franks are supporting); and Yellow Red Sparks hit at the Silverlake Lounge (with the Fling). … Also you have Night 2 of Tool at the Nokia Theatre; the Riverwinds at the Viper Room; Katelyn Epperly at the Mint; Jenni Alpert at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach; and Rocket at the Dragonfly.
I saw the New Pornos in SF last night. If the music world were made up solely of indie-rock bands, these guys would be the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Go-Go’s and all of country music put together. It will be a great show tonight.
