Band names just get stupider and stupider. If you’re a fan of the English language as well as music, it’s all you can do these days to swallow hard and give tunes by people calling themselves Cymbals Eat Guitars or Gobble Gobble a chance. Which brings me to Dale Earnardt Jr. Jr., the Detroit duo of Joshua Epstein and Daniel Zott, whose music, I’m very certain, would crash and burn on the NASCAR circuit. Their pop tropicalia, on display on the “Horse Power” EP, is like fruit punch, gently laced with psychedelics: ’60s-style harmonies, twinkling electronics, plastic beats, all fashioning a woozy sonic cocoon. They cover “God Only Knows” too. Be careful out there.
