It was easier to get hip than hydrated at Saturday’s steamy FYF Fest at downtown’s Los Angeles State Historic Park. The star of the much-ballyhooed conflagration of niche artists seemed to Logistical Problems. Thirty minutes to get a $4 bottle of water? Forty-five minutes to grab a quesadilla? Ninety minutes just to get in? Welcome to the underground.
By way of apology, promoter Sean Carlson has discounted tonight’s FYF Fan Fest shows. In an e-mail today, he said: “Yesterday was FYF Fest. We know all the problems. … The lines. … And are addressing them now. In no way are we sleeping on these problems. The bands were amazing and the turnout was unreal. I’m speechless.”
So tonight’s 8 o’clock show at the Glass House featuring Panda Bear and the Goat is $5. Tonight’s 9 o’clock show at the Echoplex featuring the Rapture and Big Freedia is $5. And tonight’s show at the Echo featuring Davila 666 is free.
Those who braved the conditions were treated to an explosive performance by !!!, as well as great sets by the Rapture, Growlers, Warpaint, Soft Pack, Local Natives, and Dead Man’s Bones (special mini-gallery below).
