It seems like forever since we noted that Y La Bamba was working on a new album with Chris Funk of the Decemberists. It was recorded last year, and now the Portland, Ore., vehicle for the songwriting of Luzelena Mendoza – the young woman whose life-threatening battle with dysentery, giardia and their side effects changed her world view and informed her vintage folk music – is finally releasing the record. It’s titled “Lupon,” and it’s out Sept. 28 on Tender Loving Empire. Mendoza’s lilting vocals float over the songs, which seem like Devotchka if they had a Mexican traveling circus.
