Download: The Black Angels, ‘Telephone’

While the Black Angels have always worn their psych-rock influences firmly on their collective sleeve, it’s hard to recall the Austin quintet sounding as retro as they do on latest single “Telephone.” Ditching their trademark droning guitar sound – for two minutes at least – the band instead opts for a spirited take on classic ’60s pop that could be lifted straight from a Nuggets compilation, replete with handclaps, organ stabs and group harmonies. Die-hard fans might be pleased to hear that normal service is resumed on the majority of a Dave Sardy-produced third album, “Phosphene Dream,” which the band is now promoting on the road following a storming network TV debut on Letterman last month.
