Boom Boom Satellites, surviving long and strong

Way back in 1998, at the height of electronica’s Big Beat revolution, Japanese duo Boom Boom Satellites released a ferocious little single called “Push Eject.” The drums were mad, chopped-up rolls of off-time goodness, and the only thing gnarlier than Michiyuki Kawashima’s three-pack-a-day scream was his shredding guitar solos. It was edgier than anything the Crystal Method were putting out, more sophisticated than Fatboy, and could stand toe to toe on the angst meter with Prodigy, albeit less ravey.

But outside of Japan, they never really got their due. After releasing a handful of albums throughout the mid-2000s, they came back strong in 2007 with “Exposed,” and again this year with “To The Loveless,” keeping their fused and bruised style intact but upping the production dosage for today’s more discerning ears.

If you’ve seen any of their live clips from 2006’s Fuji Rock Festival, you know they can slay a crowd, so if the Troubadour is full up, their show on Oct. 25 is gonna be mad. Little bit Underworld, little bit Ministry, and last I checked, a smokin’ hot drummer.

“People’s expectations are very different to what they were, say, five years ago,” say BBS. “We need to keep up, and we see our music as a living, breathing entity that’s always open to new influences, evolving to keep our fans on their toes. Maybe that’s one of the reasons for our longevity.”

Having a live show that kicks much ass helps, too.
