Gus Seyffert is one of those magical players that seems to matriculate to the good stuff. He’s made a fine album as Willoughby, played alongside excellent local artists such as the Bird and the Bee, Mike Andrews, Charlie Wadhams and the Sweet Hurt, produced a slew of others and has an imprint of his own, Sargent Records. Earlier this year, he started the free “Sargent Singles” series – it was intended to be monthly, but his current gigs as touring bassist for Norah Jones and the Black Keys have stifled that – that sees Seyffert producing, performing and sometimes co-writing with local artists. In the songs so far, Inara George, Benji Hughes, Jake Blanton, Andrews and Wadhams have felt the Seyffert touch (there’s a Willoughby track too); there’s a lot to like in this six-pack.
