Part poet, part wanderer, Troy Von Balthazar is a man of many words and places.  He grew up surfing in Hawaii, cut his teeth as the front man of the ’90s sadcore band Chokebore, and now spends the majority of his time couch-surfing around Europe writing novels when he’s not writing songs.  His second album, “How to Live on Nothing” (out last month Third Side Records) is a kaleidoscopic recap of the various beds he’s woken up in, the new faces he’s encountered in every locale, and the melancholy way things always seem to stay the same wherever you are.  The music swirls behind the stories, with lilting guitars, worthy lyrics, and boy/girl vocals. Von Balthazar also has a Los Angeles connection:  Several songs on “How to Live on Nothing” were recorded here at New Monkey studios and feature local band Black Pine.
