Fast and furious and old-school and … NPR-approved? Yeah, that’s OFF! – the punk-rock supergroup of Keith Morris (Black Flag/Circle Jerks), Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides), Mario Rubalcaba (Earthless/Hot Snakes/Rocket From the Crypt) and Steven McDonald (Redd Kross). If anyone’s entitled to engage in some healthy revivalism, it’s these guys. The 55-year-old Morris, after all, has become something of a father figure to a new generation of the underground, still spreading the punk gospel with as much energy as he did back in the day (and even recent days – still memorable: the Circle Jerks’ 2007 set at Warped Tour). The quartet’s debut album is titled “First Four EPs” – 16 songs, the longest at 93 seconds – and it was just released digitally and as a boxed set of four 7-inches. They played their entire first EP on Carson Daly’s show, and now even NPR gave OFF! a little love. That has to make Mr. Morris’ latté taste a little sweeter.
