‣ Long Beach record store Fingerprints is getting new digs. The store, located in the Belmont Shore area for 18 years, is moving to 420 E. Fourth St., in LBC’s East Village Arts district. The new space, which triples Fingerprints’ size, is a 9,200-square-foot building that will also house a Portfolio Coffeehouse. All of which is good news for music shoppers and anybody who felt claustrophobic at some of Fingerprints’ legendary in-store performances over the years. The planned opening of the new Fingerprints was next Tuesday, but owner Rand Foster said today that date was a “moving target” and the new space might not be open until the following weekend. Stay tuned. More details here and here. (Photo of Fitz & the Tantrums’ in-store at Fingerprints by Doug Kresse)
‣ Local Natives became the latest hometown heroes to score at gig at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The quintet plays Feb. 26 (tickets on sale Jan. 15), and, yes, I hear that there will be a chamber orchestra involved.
‣ Lot 1 Cafe in Echo Park has begun hosting live music. Hoping perhaps to fill a void created when nearby Echo Curio was shut down late last year due to permit issues, the eatery at 1533 Sunset, which serves wine and beer, obtained a cafe entertainment license, erected a modest stage, got a P.A. and on Sunday hosted a small show. Good show this Friday, with Peter & the Wolf, the Black Jesus and Summer Twins performing.
‣ Big ceremony at noon Wednesday at Music Center Plaza downtown (135. S. Grand) to kick off Los Angeles Arts Month. The politicos will be out in force, of course, here’s a reason to stop by on your lunch hour: David Hidalgo and Louie Perez of Los Lobos will be performing selections from “Evangeline, the Queen of Make-Believe.”
‣ TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek will play bass on Jane’s Addiction’s next album. Details.
‣ The year’s first First Fridays show at the Natural History Museum this week will be webcast on KCRW. Little Dragon and Sister Crayon kick off the sixth-month series on Friday.
Lot 1 is partially responsible for getting Echo Curio shut down, as they used to repeatedly call the authorities to complain about EC. They also ratted out the Park for doing BYOB/offering corkage without a license a few years back. But if that’s who you want to big up…
Don’t know that I was “big-upping” anything. Simply reporting that there was a new place offering shows.
the owner of lot 1 cafe also owns the vintage shop next door and benefited from selling kitschy items to the people who went to the echo curio for shows. when the curio closed down, sales went to zero from several hundred a night so i’m pretty sure she was all for the local business support. the vintage shop is now converted to a show space to fill that void. i have no direct affiliation to either space but i have talked to all the owners of both spaces and, really, creating false accusations/rumors is not the proper way to resolve anything. actively supporting and seeking new spaces and opportunities for the curio is more beneficial.
Sorry i used some crazy ass slang, granddad!
