[Birthday greetings today to Cat Power … Now on to the weekend:]
Five very different shows that pique my interest:
‣ Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Wanda Jackson, the 73-year-old Queen of Rockabilly whose new album “The Party Ain’t Over” (out next week) was produced by Jack White, starts a two-night stand Sunday night at the El Rey Theatre. White and the Third Man House Band back her. Love the video for “Thunder on the Mountain,” above. Get your legend on.
‣ Week 3 of the Melvins’ residency at the Satellite tonight features the band perforing its album “Bullhead,” as well as a regular set.
‣ Hellogoodbye, the fun Orange County pop outfit that is back from some nasty record label problems four-plus years after releasing their debut album, headlines the Troubadour on Saturday, with Gold Motel supporting. Hellogoodbye’s new disc is titled “Would It Kill You?”
‣ Rocco Deluca plays the Satellite on Saturday night, and the bonus will be a set from Daniel Lanois and Brian Blade of Lanois’ solo material
‣ The first LA Music Video Festival goes off Sunday at the Downtown Independent Theater with a couple of interesting panel discussions – then, later Sunday night at the Echoplex, the afterparty features music from a good lineup of local bands: Voxhaul Broadcast, Black Apples and Lemon Sun.
