Download: The Fresh & Onlys, ‘Waterfall’

The true value of those best-of-the-year lists that some love to pillory is to alert you to music you’ve slept on, or dismissed too quickly. So a tip of the cap to anybody who mentioned the Fresh & Onlys, the San Francisco quartet whose cocktail of winsome jangle-pop and brooding psychedelia is stirring indeed. The foursome – originally scheduled to play Waved Out 2 in L.A. last year and then bowed out – has made three albums in only two years of existence. Last fall’s “Play It Strange” is 36 minutes of hazy splendor that references the ’60s but doesn’t plunder it; you might’ve seen this song posted elsewhere, but maybe not.
