There are few falsettos in indie rock that are distinct as Hayden Thorpe’s of England’s Wild Beasts. His countertenor voice, which drastically contrasts with Ben Little’s elegantly deep vocals, was heavily showcased on previous albums “Limbo, Panto” and “Two Dancers,” and their forthcoming album “Smother” continues the mysterious and textured operatic art-rock that darts between clear light and shadows. “Albatross,” however, treads a slower current for a lead single. Stripping any post-punk elements they’ve ever touched on, the song boasts a new mellow, lush electronic foundation, and Thorpe and Little’s emphasis on direct harmonies is what gives this track melodic swell. “Smother” is slated for release on May 10 via Domino Records, and “Albatross” will be released on May 2 with a special 7-inch available on Record Store Day (April 16).
