[Fourth of five installments as we look at 25 L.A. bands headed to SXSW:]
If you like: Waitresses made good, Southern charm, songs in TV shows.
What’s up with her: Seems like forever ago (it was 2007) when the everybody’s favorite Hotel Cafe server self-released her debut album, it was scooped up by a label and by the next year she was a touring artist. Another album is on the way, this one produced by Arne Van Petegem, the Belgian electro artist known to glitch-poppers as Styrofoam. What’s to separate her from hundreds of gals-with-guitars? Maybe this album. (Photo: Jeff Koga)
Catch her: 10:30 p.m. Saturday at St. David’s Historic Sanctuary.
If you like: Youth, rabble-rousing, skater kids, multimedia phenomenons, fantasizing about washing rappers’ mouths out with soap.
What’s up with them: The hip-hop collective’s full name is Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. The rest you can deduce from their performance on “Fallon,” above, or from Billboard’s big cover story.
Catch them: Midnight Saturday at the Billboard Bungalow at Buffalo Billiards.
If you like: Songs you can wash down with PBR, folk-country done by country folks, Idaho, brotherly barbs.
What’s up with them: The Idaho transplants (well, three of them anyway) just released their second album since moving to L.A.; it’s called “Footsteps,” and it’s a pretty big leap for brothers David and Travis LaBrel and bandmates Marshall Vore, Brian McGinnis and Kyle Vicioso. Thankfully, your hangover should be gone by Friday, in time to catch kindred spirits Leslie Stevens and the Badgers play at the Tap Room.
Catch them: 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Black & Tan.
If you like: Theatrics, hooky pop-rock, film majors, themed parties.
What’s up with them: From the quartet that brought you Zombie Prom, alien-soliciting shows, “Future Father’s Day” and close projections of the strange kind comes … new music? Yes, with only a six-song mini-album to their credit, A/J Jackson, Aaron Sharp, Greg Erwin and Dak are finally wrapping up a full-length, sure to offer a splash of power-pop, a dash of glam, a smidgen of indie-rock and plenty sing-alongs.
Catch them: 8 p.m. Saturday in Emo’s Main Room.
If you like: Surfing on a disco ball in a garage.
What’s up with them: The foursome of Cameron Parkins, Sarah Chernoff, Max St. John and Evan Weinerman followed up 2010’s “Urgency” EP with “Parasite Paradise,” and their frenetic live shows, part dance party and part thrash-abouts, have gotten better. Above, their “Persona” video. Stream their new EP here.
Catch them: 11 p.m. Thursday at the Victorian Room at the Driskill; midnight Friday at the Swan Dive; and more.
