Coachella: Marina & the Diamonds, a familiar ring

Who: Marina & the Diamonds in the Gobi Tent
In 3 Words Or Fewer: Short of sparkling
I’ll Remember This Until: Someone reminds me Kate Bush and Florence Welch does this much better. Marina & the Diamonds have a decent following on tour, so I assumed her tent would be at least half full in the early evening. However, this wasn’t the case for the Welsh singer (surname Diamandis). Hit songs such as “Obsessions” and “I Am Not A Robot” failed to translate their full charm in a big festival setting and as this “DIY” band played the rest of their mainstream New Wave-influenced pop songs, it wasn’t surprising to see or hear why the crowd remained rather small. Due to technical difficulties, the set also started 15 minutes late. Yet even with that hiccup, Diamandis didn’t dial down her quirky-glam stage persona for her fans. With attire reminiscent of Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” days accented by cartoon-like sunglasses, she never stopped posing for us as if we were Mr. DeMille granting her a close-up.
What I’d Say To My Friends who Were Actually Geeked Out At Brandon Flowers: Oh, the Killers joined him on stage? Yeah, he needs to try and stop performing without them. At least Marina can hold it down all on her own. (“The Diamonds” are actually her fans, not the band.)
